A guide to sustainable fashion
Sustainability is an umbrella term for products that are created and consumed in a way that can be, quite literally, sustained, while protecting both the environment and product manufacturers.
Sustainable fashion refers to clothing that is designed, manufactured, distributed, and used in ways that are environmentally friendly.
Although the brands out their claim to be sustainable but the fact is no brand is 100% sustainable. Sustainability is an effort to go closest to being environment friendly.
What can I do to be a sustainable consumer?
1. Shop from sustainable brands
Limit your purchases and purchase from brands who are promoting sustainable practices. Before buying anything, know about the brand and how the product is produced, what material is used, and what environmental impact it makes.
2. Look for recycled materials
Using pre-existing materials to create new clothing is always a great choice because it does not require the extraction of new resources from the Earth but rather makes the most use of materials that may otherwise go to waste. Before you buy anything, understand what material is used and where it came from.
3. Shop from brands with zero or low-waste
A lot of waste in the fashion industry comes from cutting out patterns, so some sustainable fashion brands are designing patterns that result in zero wasted material instead.
4. Take care of your products
Extending the life of your clothes/shoes/bags is crucial when it comes to lowering the environmental footprint, and ensuring they don’t end up clogging landfill sites after just one or two wears.
5. Purchase thrifted or second-hand clothes
Not everyone will like this but buying used clothes can greatly reduce environmental impact in a good way. Not only will you extend the life of these garments and reduce the environmental impact of your wardrobe as a result, you can also find one-of-a-kind pieces that no one else will own.
